DVV International in Palestine

DVV International has been involved in Palestine since early 2010. Working on improving opportunities and perspectives, DVV International supports the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and various education providers to improve and expand the opportunities for non-formal adult education.

DVV International supports the following programs and interventions:

National Strategy for Adult Education

DVV International efforts came to fruition, and for the first time the MoHE included adult and non-formal education in its Education Strategy with the main goals of enhancing and developing the non-formal education to ensure its continuity, equity and quality, through implementing the national strategy for adult education programs in coordination with the relevant institutions by the end of 2018/2019, and increasing the percentage of teachers and supervisors (M&F) trained in literacy programs, adult education and parallel education according to the standards of the Teacher Education Strategy TES from (0%) to (100%) in the year 2018/2019. The strong presence of adult education in the Palestinian National Strategy marks a precedent that should cause a noticeable shift in adult education in Palestine.

Potentials: Supporting Adult Education Centers in Palestine

Knowing about the potential of adult education to fight poverty and unemployment, DVV International joined forces with the Palestinian NGO Juhoud for Rural and Community Development and in cooperation with The Ministry of Education and funded by the European Union (EU) to implement the Potentials project in Palestine. The project targets the northern governorates of the West Bank, Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip during the period 2012-2014.

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of poverty and unemployment by activating the framework of cooperation between the educational, private and economical sectors. Within this three year project, 15 organizations from the targeted areas were supported to build their capacity in management, curricula development, new methods of teaching and networking enabling them to provide professional quality trainings for their beneficiaries that match the needs of local labor market and enhance their opportunity to enter the employment marketplace.

"Mehani" Project for the Development of Vocational and Technical Education in Palestine

DVV International – together with the Ministry of Education and three schools (Jenin Vocational Secondary school, Dora Secondary Technical School, Deir al Balah Vocational School in Gaza) – develops and tests a model for opening the schools for non-formal education for the community with the aim of qualifying people for jobs in the formal and informal economy.

After school programs will provide adults (including enrolled school students) the opportunity to sign up for short-term courses in a fun and flexible environment. The schools will offer different and new learning methods for the students and students will be offered the chance to participate in career days, internships and in job trainings.

Training of Trainers

In order to provide our partner organizations with the best technical support, DVV International sought to conduct training for 15 qualified trainers from different backgrounds of education from civil society organizations and freelancers, in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Jerusalem, in order to equip them with new teaching methods that they can use in their different fields.

The project will promote participatory approaches to adult education, where trainers are involved in planning the content, and outline of the trainings drawing on their experience and every-day life. This training is a very important step towards our strategic objective to build the optimal adult education centers in Palestine in the future, which we cannot achieve without strong backbone of qualified trainers and consultants who shall carry on this process with us in the next two years.
